Why do we read the classics? Why do we read the great literature? After the ravages of time, what endures is precious, that is, it at least partially transcends the limit of an epoch and grows to be something greater.
Life is short, and art is long. We need the classics because we only have a certain amount time for reading and maybe cannot bear waste too much of it on something pretending to be good literature.
